We recently celebrated Loy Krathong on Koh Tao. The celebration took place in Mae Haad by the pier. The energy was invigorating as the Koh Tao community joined together to celebrate this beautiful, luminous festival. In Thai, "loy" means "to float" and "krathong" is a basket adorned with flowers. Normally  a candle, and incense that is set out to sea accompanied by an lock of hair or small coins. This ritual pays respect and gives thanks to the Goddess of Water, Phra Mae Kong Ka. Many also hold the belief that as the krathong float away, so does misfortune and bad energy.

Every year on the evening of the twelfth lunar month, Thailand shines with glowing lanterns floating up in to the sky and ornate krathongs floating out to sea. Koh tao gleamed with tranquil lighting, as the community watched dazzling dance performances on stage. It was a peaceful, harmonious evening, as everyone came together to celebrate and wished for good fortune. Smells of delicious Thai food wafted over children's smiling faces, wide-eyed watching performers. Families gathered around lanterns and released their prayers into the sky. I felt blessed to be able to capture these moments of families, friends, and loved ones on film. It was a beautifully cathartic evening. I feel good energy coming our way!
